Changing your name after your wedding

I just got married, how do I change my last name?

In New South Wales, Australia, you can take the surname of your partner / wife / husband as yours without paying for a Birth, Deaths & Marriages Change of Name (Saving $195).

This means that when you are married, you have the choice:

  • to take your partner’s surname as is
  • your partner can take your surname as is OR
  • you can use both of your surnames with a hyphen.

To do this, you should take your ‘official marriage certificate’ issued by the NSW Birth, Death’s & Marriages to your local Services NSW. Also take your existing driver’s license.

When you get to Services NSW, you can request an updated license with your new married name.
